Action Alert from: Zoocheck Canada <zoocheck@idirect.com>
9 belugas imported to Marineland
For the sake of expediency, I enclose our previous action alert on the
Canadian/Marineland whale capture/import situation. Although it doesn't
reflect the new addition of 9 female beluga whales from Russia
approximately October 2, 1999, please use the contact information
contained below to call or fax the named politicians ASAP. As per Mark
Berman's previous suggestion to CFN, I think to stress urgency, faxes are
preferred over email.
You can also use the information contained in our media release,
previously posted, for specifics on the current situation.
If you have time, please contact the Canadian embassy in your
countries. I'm sorry, but I do not have the time right now to provide
contact information. If anyone else can do this, please do so.
We hold the Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Chrétien, the Minister of
Fisheries and Oceans Herb Dhaliwal, and the Minister of Environment
Canada, David Anderson, complicit and reponsible for this atrocity that
has resulted in the import of these 9 young beluga whales.
We are calling for an immediate ban on the capture, import and export
of whales.
Thank you,
Holly Penfound

Please write to stop the capture of Canadian whales for public display,
and to prevent the import of whales from foreign countries for
public display in Canada. We are asking the Government of
Canada to:
- Establish a policy against the capture of all cetacea (whales and
dolphins) from Canadian waters for public display, either domestic or
foreign;
- Establish a policy against the import of cetacea into Canada for
public display.
We commend the former Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, David Anderson,
for taking the first step by denying Marineland of Canada its
application to capture six beluga whales from Canadian waters. That
decision was made in June 1999. Marineland's actions in importing 3 male
beluga whales from Russia on May 30, 1999, demonstrate the urgent need for
the Government of Canada to move quickly to prohibit both captures and
imports.
We ask you to express your views to Prime Minister Chrétien, Mr.
Dhaliwal and Mr. Anderson. Please respond promptly. The issue is urgent!
A
recommendation on Canada's marine mammal capture policy may be made by Mr.
Dhaliwal any day. The import issue is being jointly examined by both
Fisheries and Oceans and Environment Canada.
