ACTION ALERT:  Vancouver February 21, 2001

Vancouver Aquarium wants 6gill sharks and dolphins!

THE GOOD NEWS: Mark your calendars and join us! MARCH 26 @ 7 PM - VANCOUVER PARK BOARD PUBLIC MEETING ON DOLPHINS I will send more info closer to the date of the meeting.

THE BAD NEWS: In a newspaper article I am sending you (see below), the Vancouver Aquarium announces it wants to place Sixgill sharks (Hexanchus griseus) and dolphins together inside the whale pool after Bjossa is gone! Capturing Sixgill sharks for display is criminal, as is keeping dolphins in captivity. At a time when scientists, NGOs and divers are working together to protect this rare a shark from directed sport and commercial fisheries in Canadian waters by seeking threatened status under COSEWIC, the Aquarium wants to start a capturing these sharks for your entertainment and their profit. Say NO! to the importation of more captive dolphins and sharks.

PLEASE WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR (especially those of you involved in the protection of this shark!) Vancouver Courier <editor@vancourier.com> Fax: (604) 738-2154

For those of you in Vancouver, more on this issue in tomorrow's Georgia Straight newspaper (Feb.22).
