New Dolphinarium in Canada?
Dear All,
On September 23, Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario acquired 6 wild
bottlenose dolphins from Russia. They were captured individually and are
being held in a separate tank. It seems that Marineland is pondering what
to do with them now.
The Edmonton Mall has already agreed to stop replacing dolphins dying
in that awful indoor abusement park, so chances are the new dolphins
aren't going there.
Because they were captured from the wild, they can't come to the
Vancouver Aquarium either - unless Marineland puts the new dolphins on
display and sells the "old" ones to the Vancouver Aquarium.
But now there's another proposed dolphinarium in Canada. The Granby Zoo
in Quebec is considering expanding their marine mammal displays in order
to keep captive dolphins. Just like the Vancouver Aquarium, the Granby Zoo
is another Canadian so-called non-profit society profiting from displaying
captive animals. The proposed dolphinarium for the Granby Zoo is still
under review and I urge you to help stop it before it's too late.
We've done it before and we can do it again! In the early 1990s, the
Montreal Biodome tried for years to set up a beluga whale display until
public pressure forced them to give up their plans and agree not to buy
any belugas at all.
Please e-mail the Granby Zoo and urge them to abandon any plans to
build another dolphinarium in Canada and to not buy any Russian dolphins
from Marineland.
